A “People’s Internet” is a movement to decentralize the web, shifting control away from giant tech corporations and back to everyday users. It prioritizes user-owned data, transparent algorithms, and community-driven digital infrastructure.
A people-owned internet is defined by three main pillars:
- Data Ownership & Privacy: Instead of “Big Tech” harvesting and monetizing your personal data, you retain control over your digital identity. You have the power to decide who sees your data and how it is utilized.
- Decentralized Platforms: Communities build their own social networks and digital spaces. These spaces are run for public good, transparency, and digital citizenship rather than for corporate profit and closed-off, algorithmic “walled gardens”.
- Community-Owned Infrastructure: Groups and municipalities band together to build their own local, high-speed networks, bypassing traditional internet service providers.
